The authors discuss the main features of geological structure, history of formation, and petroleum potential of the Dzhungarsky, Zaisansky, Alakol’sky, and Balkhashsky orogenic basins. The depressions are subject to investigation since middle ХХ century; the accumulated geological and geophysical information allow reliable evaluating their petroleum potential. Dzhungarsky depression is unlike the other basins by its large size, thick Permian-Quaternary sedimentary cover with source rocks, ancient basement, and considerable petroleum potential. In the thoroughly explored Zaisansky depression in the only small Sarybulak field, oil accumulations are discovered in the Upper Permian and Jurassic deposits and a gas accumulation in the Paleogene base. The possibilities for ramping up reserves in the Zaisansky depression are practically exhausted. Alakol’sky and Balkhashsky depressions are mainly filled by continental variegated up to 2 km thick Cenozoic deposits; they are underlaid by collision sedimentary-volcanogenic Upper Palaeozoic series. Because of the absence of oil and gas source rocks and moderate thickness of sedimentary cover, these depressions cannot be considered promising for hydrocarbon accumulation discovery.
