From the earliest studies of geological structure and hydrocarbon potential of the West Siberian Basin, applied geotectonics was used to predict the position of large oil- and gas-bearing anticlinal structures in plan, which are manifested in the Earth’s gravity and magnetic fields as strong negative anomalies. As a result, by 1970 virtually all of the elephant oil and gas fields in Western Siberia had been discovered. Currently, in order to identify the basin’s residual hydrocarbon potential, it is practical to use more detailed gravity and magnetic survey data, which allows mapping central- and fissure-type paleovolcanoes. These are regarded as sources of energy (or of matter and energy) involved in the formation of oil and gas fields. It is found that more than 90% of the fields are confined to these structures. This association is discussed by the example of the Kamenny, Samotlorsky, Salymsky, and some other fields. The article also addresses the possibility of reconstructing the geometry of the sedimentary cover on the basis of the anomalous gravity field, using the Pokrovsky area as an example. A relationship was identified whereby uplifts are associated with positive anomalies in the local component of the gravity field, rather than with negative anomalies observed in the central part of the basin. Analysis of paleo- and neotectonic features of the basin evolution allows predicting the phase behaviour of hydrocarbon accumulations. Applied geotectonics is of great importance for identifying and mapping lithological heterogeneities within the sedimentary cover, which are known of their paleotectonic origin and determine the distribution of reservoir rocks and seals. The authors propose a geological model of pre-Jurassic Basement containing new rift or riftogenic systems.
