The authors present geological and geophysical substantiation of the manifestation of the regional Pai-Khoi–Altaisky shear zone in the consolidated Basement and the basal part of the sedimentary cover of the West Siberian petroleum province. The zone is up to 200 km wide, it extends from the northwest to the southeast – from the boundaries of the Pai-Khoi–Novozemelsky to the Altai–Sayansky orogen. Within the zone, a series of major faults and numerous associated rift-related dislocations are identified. The zone is clearly expressed in potential fields, attributes of seismic reflection records, and in the morphology of Triassic rifts and Mesozoic sediments. According to common depth point (CDP) seismic reflection data, characteristic “flower structures” typical of shear zones are interpreted in vertical sections of the sedimentary cover. Deep seismic sounding sections allow suggesting a flattening of most fault dislocations within the upper crust. The shear zone is considered as an area of deep crustal destruction, that creates favourable fluid-dynamic conditions determining the enhanced petroleum potential of the pre-Jurassic basement and the Jurassic interval in the West Siberian Petroleum Province. Using a set of geological and structural criteria (distance to faults, graben boundaries, etc.) and geophysical criteria (quantified characteristics of initial potential fields and their transformations), and applying supervised pattern recognition techniques, areas of higher petroleum potential are delineated at three stratigraphic levels (pre-Jurassic, Lower Jurassic, and Middle–Upper Jurassic). It is found that zones adjacent to major strike-slip faults and horst structures associated with them are characterized by higher prospectivity. The development of the shear zone is also related to formation of typical trap structures, which may have high predictive significance.
