Prediction of new oil field discoveries in the Khanty‑Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra based on exploration results and trends

The current state of oil resource base development in the Khanty‑Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra, which possesses the highest initial and remaining oil potential in the Russian Federation, is presented. The main indicators of resource development are discussed both for the region as a whole and for individual plays and sub-plays identified within the subsurface of Yugra. Five priority large promising zones in the western and eastern parts of the study area are delineated for new oil field discovery and development. The criteria for their identification included proven oil-bearing capacity, low (or uneven) exploration maturity, licensing coverage, and the prospectivity of plays and sub-plays. Taking into account the tectonic and geopetroleum association, density of 2D CDP seismic exploration maturity, and identified total initial oil resources, the number of promising plays and sub-plays was determined in each zone. Quantitative assessment of total initial hydrocarbon resources in the promising zones was carried out using the method of quantitative geological patterns. Qualitative assessment of D0 Category resources was conducted according to a risk-based methodology for prospecting drilling at ready-to-drill traps, developed by the V.I. Shpilman Research and аnalytical centre for the rational use of the subsoil. An analysis of testing results in exploratory wells drilled in the promising zones outside the boundaries of discovered accumulations was conducted. The number of prospecting wells required to achieve the specified level of resource identification was calculated for each zone. The calculated number of prospecting wells was compared with the actual dynamics of geological exploration activities in the territory under consideration. The readiness of promising zones to prospecting drilling was evaluated.
