The authors discuss the major issues related to identification and tracing the local Middle Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous stratigraphic units in Western Siberia. The presented review allowed concluding that representation of most of the Jurassic and Cretaceous formations do not fully comply with the requirements of the Stratigraphic Code. The type sections for most formations remain poorly defined. The absence of preserved core, coupled with insufficient published data on boundaries and stratigraphic unit properties, prevents their confident identification in practice. The authors use the unified scheme to describe the stratigraphic interval under consideration that was penetrated by the Zaozyornaya-1 well. Each formation description contains the following information: age and variability of type section; thickness; exploration history; lithological, paleontological, and well logging characteristics; sub-formations and members; criteria for boundary delineation; presence of markers inside the formation; geographic range of stratigraphic unit; as well as their relationships and matching with time-equivalent local stratigraphic units. Jurassic and Cretaceous deposit breakdown into formations requires revision. These formations demand re-examination and re-description in accordance with contemporary concepts.
