In recent years, the is active discussion ongoing about the issues and prospects for the development and replenishment of hydrocarbon resource base in the Russian Federation. The challenges associated with replenishing hydrocarbon reserves and resources are largely responding to geological factors, including the gradual depletion of unique and large field resources discovered during the USSR’s intensive exploration campaigns in the 1960s–1980s, downsizing the promising structures available for drilling, and increase in geological complexity of new objects being identified. As potential solutions to these challenges, large-scale projects were proposed for comprehensive exploration and development of new promising territories and offshore areas, which are primarily aimed at expanding Russia’s mineral resource base and creating new mineral resource centres beyond the traditional oil and gas production hubs. However, in the current context, implementation of these projects appears technologically problematic and economically unviable. Exploration targets in Western Siberia are complicated in terms of geological structure, while infrastructure is either absent or underdeveloped, making their development sub-economic. The analysis carried out in 2016 and 2019 demonstrated the major oil reserves and resources remain concentrated in traditional oil producing regions, primarily in Western Siberia. Although, the time of discovering large traps associated mainly with anticlinal structures, is coming to an end. A transition is required from the “structural” stage of subsoil development to the study and localization of structurally complicated geological objects of non-anticlinal, as well as combination (structural and stratigraphic) and faulted anticline types. That is, by shifting the paradigm of geological exploration, it may be possible to discover “one more” Western Siberia within the region.
