In the 1960s, giant gas deposits were discovered in the Cenomanian Upper Cretaceous deposits in the north of Western Siberia. The largest fields (Urengoy, Yamburg, and Medvezhye) are discovered in the Nadym-Pur-Tazovsky interfluve of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The development of these fields became a powerful driver of social and economic growth in the region. This spurred the emergence of sizable population centres, the creation of industrial facilities, and the development of critical infrastructure networks. For decades, this region has been – and continues to remain – the heartland of Russia’s gas production. Over years of development, more than 17 trillion cubic meters of gas have already been extracted from the Cenomanian deposits alone. No matter how extensive these reserves might be, they will eventually be depleted. While substantial production capacity still exists, clear signs of output decline are already emerging. The current circumstances call for analysing possible approaches to establish optimal conditions that would improve profitability of heavily depleted fields while accelerating development of both above-Cenomanian and deeper formations. Addressing this challenge will prove critical for maintaining social and economic stability in the Nadym-Pur-Tazovsky region, and will serve as a crucial factor in meeting the targets set forth in Russia’s 2050 Energy Strategy adopted in 2025.
