The publication outlines key historical milestones in the 50-year history of formation and evolution of the West Siberian Geological and Geophysical Research Institute, a unique centre that pioneered the implementation of methods of geophysical exploration in Western Siberia. The authors highlight key achievements of the institute’s researchers in regional geological studies, geological and geophysical data processing and interpretation, reserves estimation, geological and hydrodynamic modelling, as well as hydrocarbon reservoir engineering in the West Siberian oil and gas province. The most significant works are also presented that are related to different stages of the research centre life. The article outlines the key objectives and results achieved in the West Siberian Geological and Geophysical Research Institute (ZapSibNIIGG) within the framework of the state assignment in two primary areas, they are: conducting special and experimental methodological work related to geological studies of subsoil; regional field geological and geophysical investigations and geological surveying in the West Siberian Petroleum Province. The institute’s current technological capabilities, extensive expertise in studying the subsurface of Russia’s key petroleum province, and highly qualified personnel – all allow the institute to look confidently to the future, set meaningful production goals, and plan for the further development of the research centre, considering new industry challenges.
